Reviewing Hungarian chocolate “Sport” and Hungarian cookies “Győri édes”

March 12th

By Alex Lingerfelt

On the first of March the Hungarian culture Union participated in its very first Clubapalooza event. Clubapalooza is basically an event where different school clubs get to sell different treats in the hope of fundraising. For its first year participating in the event the Hungarian Culture Union hosted a stand of around five to six people advertising and selling Hungarian chocolate and cookies. The chocolate brand is Sport and the cookie brand is Győri édes. The next part of this article will be a detailed description and review of the brands.

Hungarian Chocolate: Sport

The Hungarian chocolate was pretty good and definitely a much more unique version of chocolate compared to the American chocolate I’m used to. The chocolate bars come with a minty-flavor that resembled that of the York mint-chocolates, only unlike York, the mint was subtly enough to make the chocolate taste good. Furthermore, the chocolate came in a variety of flavors such as original, large, extra large, MAX, and coffee. My personal favorite flavor was the coffee flavor, though admittedly, the mix of chocolate, mint, and coffee is not for the faint of heart. The energy from the coffee chocolate bars powered me through swim practice that day, overall, 8/10.

Hungarian Cookies: Győri édes

A more savory snack--but still sweet--is the Hungarian cookie “Győri édes.” The cookies are simple with their purpose, they are wheat cookies that are meant to fill you up throughout the day, or act as a treat after a long day of advertising the Hungarian Culture Union during Clubapalooza. Oftentimes in America we put too much sugar in our sweets, not in Hungary! The sugar content of the cookie was perfect. Furthermore, corporations in America seldom pioneer a care and respect for the environment, but contrary to those multinational companies in America, the Hungarian producers of these cookies make sure to promote sustainable practices. Other benefits of getting food from Hungary is you can be assured the food is not genetically modified, organisms are banned in Hungary. 8.5/10

Overall, though sometimes conflicting with my American taste buds, eating the snacks and sharing the snacks with my school’s community was an enjoyable experience I am sure to remember. I especially enjoyed reading the facts on the back of the packaging explaining how I’m kind of supporting sustainability by buying the product. Let this be a lesson of the benefits of trying something new!
